From the Section Chair

Jeff Lackey

How quickly the year is moving along. We are nearly half way through our ASQ calendar-year. So if you haven’t joined us as yet, you need to mark your calendar for the following meetings:

December 11 - Six Sigma, Bart Johnson & Steve Malick
January 17 - Research for Measurement & Analysis, Jim Mirabella
February 22 - Koalaty Kid Program
March 22 - Supplier Quality Management (tentative)
April 19 - Risk Assessment & FMEA
May 17 - Awards & Recognition Night

If these dates or program topics change, we’ll let you know.

A last minute conflict prevented several who had pre-registered from attending the November workshop; however, twenty people participated. They learned why making reliable measurements is so important to quality improvement, especially when process variation is being estimated. This leads us into the December 11 meeting, where you will learn practical aspects, organizational structure, and strategies needed for successful implementation of Six Sigma. (Incidentally, a dozen people have already made reservations; so it should be a good meeting.)

Congratulations to our November meeting raffle winners, Andrew Perez and Melissa Alwood. Two excellent quality books were awarded: Understanding Variation and Understanding Statistical Process Control, both by Don Wheeler. We will have two Six Sigma books for our raffle at the December meeting. Not a bad prize for just showing up.

On November 3, I attended a Leadership Training session in Valdosta taught by Marsha Becker, the Deputy Region Director for ASQ’s Region 15. Bart Johnson went to a similar session in September in Orlando. Both he and I agree that this is an excellent session. Much good information is shared about how the ASQ organization functions as well as many good suggestions of where to find quality-related information and assistance. She also covers some topics that any small business owner should be aware of related to taxes, business practices, etc. Any ASQ member is welcome to attend. There is no cost - only your time on a Saturday from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. And you get RU credits, too. We have eight people who have said they are interested, and we will try to schedule a Saturday in January or February in Marsha’s busy schedule to come to Jacksonville. Let me know if you’re interested.

Marcia Henderson (Certification Chair) often needs people to proctor ASQ certification exams. If you’re interested, call her at 904-443-3905. She wants to have a pool of potential proctors that she can call if needed.

If you want to volunteer to be more active in the Section, or be a program speaker at one of our upcoming meetings (even for 2002-2003), please give me a call at 904-443-3981, or via e-mail at jlackey@visus.jnj.com.

If you have not had a chance to attend a meeting, we encourage you to join us December 11 to network with your quality friends in the Jacksonville area. I’ve also been told that the River City Brewing Company is a great place for a meeting. I’m looking forward to it and hope to see you there, too. If I don’t - please have a very safe and joyous holiday season.

See you at the meeting,

Jeff Lackey

Six Sigma Strategy - Bart Johnson, Senior Quality Engineer, Vistakon, Jacksonville, Florida

Useful information will be provided for students, professionals, and corporate leaders interested in the further pursuit of Six Sigma.

Before coming to Vistakon in May 2001, Bart worked for Praxair Surface Technologies, Inc. in the role of Black Belt, and Manager of Six Sigma deployment for 4 aerospace plants. He was promoted to Production Manager and then Plant Manager for one of the facilities, to fully integrate Six Sigma into the management of the operation, and improve the satisfaction of the plant’s primary customer, General Electric Aircraft Engines.

Johnson & Johnson/Vistakon’s approach to integrating Six Sigma with its Total Quality Initiatives - Steve Malick, Vice-President Competitive Improvement, Vistakon, Jacksonville, Florida

Signature of Quality (SOQ) is a comprehensive business model used within Johnson & Johnson companies to assess performance against world-class competitive criteria in the areas of key processes and business results. This presentation will give an overview of how Six Sigma is integrated into this model. Process Excellence (PE) is a set of systematic improvement methodologies used to drive rapid and substantial improvement. PE includes: Six Sigma, Lean, and Design for Excellence as methodologies using statistically based tools to define, measure, analyze, improve/innovate, and control any business issue.

Steve has been with Johnson & Johnson for twenty-four years. Before becoming VP of Competitive Improvement at Vistakon, Steve worked for four other Johnson & Johnson companies, most recently with Johnson & Johnson Medical. Steve’s prior roles have been in human resources, manufacturing, operations, marketing, and general management.

Research for Measurement & Analysis - Dr. Jim Mirabella, Director of Institutional Research, Florida Community College at Jacksonville

Research is a vital part of decision making. To be useful, research must be valid and reliable. This includes selecting samples, collecting data and analyzing for results. This workshop will focus on the steps involved in conducting valid research, choosing from the many sampling and data collection methods, as well as minimizing opportunities for sampling error.

Jim teaches a variety of statistical courses at FCCJ, Webster University, Nova Southeastern, Jacksonville University and Central Michigan University. He has broad experience in the military and private manufacturing organizations. Look forward to an informative and entertaining workshop.
