This position has the responsibility and authority to ensure software products meet or exceed customer expectations for quality and reliability.  The position contributes to product development and regulatory compliance by defining, implementing and demonstrating achievement of quality and reliability goals, and supporting the product lifecycle through continual product and process improvement initiatives. This position also performs, facilitates and supports product risk assessment and failure analysis.



  • Provides coordination and guidance to cross functional teams to ensure software quality objectives are met for product software, manufacturing software, quality system software and software technologies included or used in the creation or production of medical devices.

  • Performs, facilitates and participates in risk management, software risk analysis, fault tree analysis, failure trending and failure analysis.

  • Demonstrates functional knowledge and expertise in product development, software development, software lifecycle processes, regulatory requirements, international standards and risk management.

  • Performs, assists, reviews and/or provides coordination and guidance in verification and validation, traceability and testability of product software, manufacturing software, quality system software and software technologies  included or used in the creation or production of medical devices.

  • Develops and implements the software quality program according to regulatory requirements, international standards and Medtronic corporate, sector and division requirements, goals and objectives.

  • Identifies software quality challenges and software quality improvement opportunities and provides information to facilitate and support long-term planning.

  • Performs software failure analysis process activities that includes risk assessment, root cause analysis and ensures that corrective and preventative measures meet acceptable standards of quality robustness and reliability.

  • Demonstrates functional knowledge of design for reliability methods and attributes.

  • Facilitates systematic reliability analysis of features, requirements, architecture, interfaces, and designs, through the appropriate application of reliability engineering techniques.

  • Contributes to the definition of Medtronic site, division and sector software quality requirements, goals and objectives.

  • All activities must be performed in compliance with the Quality System.

  • Performs duties in compliance with environmental, health and safety related site rules, policies or governmental regulations.

  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Travel requirement: less than 25%




  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Computer Engineering/EE or equivalent.


  • Minimum of five to eight years of experience with a Bachelor's degree or three to six years with a Master’s degree.

  • Three to five years Software Quality Engineering, SW/FW Engineering or equivalent with experience in medical device design, development and testing. 

  • Minimum of five years industry experience, preferably in the medical device manufacturing industry.



  • Working knowledge of applicable industry standards.

  • Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts.

  • Ability to provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, and practicable, and consistent with organizational objectives.

  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks/projects and manage priorities accordingly.

  • Team lead and/or project management experience preferred.

  • Must be able to work in a team environment and exert influence without alienating others.

  • Experience and working knowledge of statistical analysis methods/software preferred.

  • Experience in the application of statistical methods.

  • Excellent presentation skills.

  • General knowledge of other related disciplines.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
